About image
We are providing information to stop Renee Marie Paxton from scamming hundreds of unsuspecting horse lovers. She advertises horses on Facebook and various horse sale sites. She lies about the horses and their backgrounds/abilities.

Are the horses at Southern States Lot going to slaughter if people don't rescue them?

NO. These ARE NOT rescue horses. These horses are often sick, injured, lame, aged, and/or dangerous. Some are surplus horses that didn't sell at the Magnolia Stockyards auctions. Some are perfectly good horses they think will sell for more money than they would bring at auction.

Southern States Lot used to be called "Southern States Rescue Lot". Renee started adding tag numbers to the horse ads to make it seem more legitimate. If you pay close attention, you will notice most of the ad wordage is recycled.

Southern States Equine is run by George Varner Jr and his sister Stacy Varner McDaniel in Mississippi. Southern States Equine and Southern States Lot are directly associated with Magnolia Stockyards.

Renee Paxton advertises for and processes transactions for the Varner Family. She lives in Florida and never actually sees the horses in person.

Where are the horses at Southern States Lot located?

Most of the horses are in Mississippi at Magnolia Stockyards.

Does my money go toward rescuing other horses heading to slaughter?

NO. Your money goes into the pockets of George Varner Jr, Stacy Varner McDaniel and Renee Paxton. It's a scam, not a rescue.

Can I physically go see the horse I'm interested in at Southern States Lot?

NO. Most people are told they cannot visit the lot because it "is a liability" to the people who run the lot. They will allow people who are picking up their own horses on the property.

What can I do if I already got scammed?

  • Stop payment on your credit card!
  • If you used "goods and services" through PayPal, file a dispute ASAP.
  • Call your bank and file a fraud report.
  • Contact the Attorney General in your state, as well as Mississippi and Florida (Renee lives in Florida).
  • Contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint for internet fraud.

Potential Buyer

Southern States Lot has become one of my favorite sites and I was thinking when I buy, I would buy from them, not really thinking that way now! Interestingly I have searched MANY times for reviews on SSL and never found ANYTHING, which I thought was very strange. Then one day this group showed up on my Facebook as an group I might be interested in, AND boy was I interested!!! Thank you ALL for sharing your stories, you are saving people from going through what you are going through!

The mare I have is not safe for husbands/guests nor would I ever attempt that. I also am not interested in ‘putting the work into’ a 19 yr old horse that it would take to possibly make a trail horse out of her. Everyone is different, but the ‘breaking and hard tuning’ days are behind me. I was willing to pay for push button, not a mare that came to me likely doped, as I had a different horse on my hands by the next day. She is surly, next to impossible to catch, barely able to handle, free with the back feet, and just in general nothing that was advertised.

What many of you don’t understand is: these horses are never going to slaughter if you don’t "rescue" (buy) them. They are just sale barn horses that Renee Paxton gets from “Southern States Equine”. They are not going to Mexico. They aren’t going to Canada. They aren’t going to slaughter at all. Renee gets more money by pulling at your heartstrings, making the buyer feel like they are saving the horses.
